About the Swiss Bank Employees Association

The Swiss Bank Employees Association (SBPV) is the staff association for employees in the banking and financial sector in Switzerland. Since it was founded in 1918, the SBPV has been working in dialogue with its social partners to promote a sustainable Swiss financial centre characterized by secure jobs and fair working conditions. The association's main objective is to ensure the professional and economic well-being of all employees in the Swiss financial sector.

In order to achieve this goal, the SBPV maintains a social partnership within which collective negotiations on working conditions, salary systems and job security take place. A central component of this partnership is the collective employment contract (CEC), which regulates the employment conditions of bank employees. The VAB lays down minimum standards for working hours, vacations, salaries, measures in the event of mergers and restructuring and the participation rights of elected employee representatives.

Another collective employment agreement, the agreement on working time recording (VAZ), has been in place since 2016. This allows working time recording to be waived under certain conditions and lays down provisions on health protection. Both collective employment agreements do not automatically apply to all financial institutions; rather, the respective institutions must sign the agreement. Around 50 banks are subject to the VAB, including most of the large institutions such as UBS, including Credit Suisse, and Zürcher Kantonalbank. Most Swiss banks have signed up to the VAZ.

The SBPV also offers advisory services for its members in matters relating to employment and social security law as well as support in the event of problems in the workplace. The association works closely with the HR committees in the banks, particularly in cases of restructuring and mass redundancies, and is also involved in training and further training for its members.
